About Creative Coverups
Where it all began
Creative Coverups began in 2011, born from love and inspired by one incredible woman—my sister, Barb.

In February of that year, Barb was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. Just weeks after her diagnosis, she underwent surgery, and we learned the cancer had already spread to her lymph nodes. Chemotherapy was inevitable.

As her treatments began, we knew hair loss was just around the corner. I wanted to find something special for Barb to wear—something beautiful, colorful, and uplifting. But after searching everywhere, I was deeply disappointed in the limited, uninspiring options available.

With over 40 years of sewing experience, I knew I could create something better. Drawing from Barb’s vibrant personality, her dreams of travel, and the unique business she ran (where she was affectionately known as “the Telephone Lady”), I began crafting 100% cotton, novelty-printed chemo caps just for her.
The smile on her face when I presented her with those caps said it all.

With encouragement from my husband Garry—and thoughtful input from Barb—I made improvements to the designs, and in July 2011, Creative Coverups was officially launched.

Honoring Barb’s Legacy
Throughout 2012, Barb underwent several rounds of chemotherapy, facing each new challenge with incredible courage and grace. She never stopped smiling, even as the cancer grew more aggressive.
In December 2012, Barb’s journey came to an end. Our family lost a bright, beautiful soul, and I lost my beloved sister. I am forever grateful for the time we had, and proud to carry her spirit forward through this work. She will always be in my heart.

40 years of
SEWING EXPERIENCE
Bringing experience and heart to every piece
From a Small Sewing Room
to a Growing Community
Creative Coverups started in Red Deer, Alberta, as a home-based business. I sewed each cap with care and delivered them to hospitals in Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton. As word spread, these caps found their way to not only cancer patients, but also nurses, doctors, and others who appreciated their comfort and style.

In 2018, Garry and I relocated to Lethbridge to be closer to our growing family. That move marked a new chapter: I stepped away from hospital vending and shifted toward online sales (ETSY) and local boutiques.

Each new product begins with research: What fabric works best? Who would benefit from it? Where else is it available? How can I improve the design? Only after carefully refining the product—ensuring it's both functional and beautiful—do I make it available to sell.

Handcrafted from the heart
Over 85% of my cotton fabrics and notions are sourced locally—from fabric stores, church sales, retired quilters, and the Canadian Fabric Destash Marketplace. I strongly believe in supporting fellow small businesses, charities, and makers whenever I can. The rest of my supplies come from online sources or are found while traveling across Canada and the U.S.
At Creative Coverups, everything is made with pride, care, and the goal of bringing a bit of beauty, comfort, and joy into someone’s life.
